Africa4Nature Health Initiative (Phase I)

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Green Growth Africa in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) implemented the Africa4Nature Health (A4NH) Initiative. The seven-week initiative was implemented in two dimensions, namely, exploratory research and social media campaign.

The research studied and analysed the various linkages between COVID-19 and nature including the implications of COVID-19 on various themes of human livelihood. The study finds employment, poverty, water, waste management, renewable energy, wildlife, green economy, and food security as major themes of human livelihood impacted by COVID-19 in Africa. The report of the study will be made public soon.

The social media arm of the initiative campaigned on the need for humanity to re-calibrate our interactions with nature; the central focus of the post-2020 nature conservation and biodiversity framework, the “New Deal for Nature and People”.

The video messages on Facebook were seen by a total of 4,124,091 people in African countries with up to 2,528,622 people actively engaged while 919,512 people took actions based on the video messages. On the other hand, the video messages on Instagram had 350,394 views while the tweets engaged high level stakeholders including Nigeria’s Minister of State for Environment, UNEP’s Regional Director for Africa and former Minister of Environment, Republic of Benin, UN Habitat Youth, UNFCCC CTCN Director, among others.

The campaign also fed into thirteen (13) news stories on frontline newspapers such as Guardian Newspapers (Nigeria), Authority Newspapers (Nigeria), World News Monitor (Austria) among other news platforms. Please find some links below:
