Creativity and Awareness: Loreto College’s Response to Climate Change

With technical and funding support from Green Growth Africa in Partnership with the University of Waterloo – WISE, Canada and Bard Graduate Programs in Sustainability, USA, Loreto College, Mauritius, hosted the Worldwide Teach-In on Climate and Justice Event to educate its student on climate change and its impact. The event had four breakout session that lasted 3 hours with eighty-two participants. To raise awareness for the event, the EcoHeroes Go Green club designed a poster for the event and shared it with their school’s community, other colleges and the national Eco school Coordinator.

The program kickstarted with a video for the first breakout session that was compiled by the president of the Ecoheroes club to give a basis on their reason for gathering and an insight to the impact of climate change in Mauritius. The participants were divided into twelve groups to brainstorm on climate change and what they’d like to know about it, which they discussed on generally.

For the second breakout session, they had a debate on some of the solutions to climate change. Then a second video was played on practical measures to reducing carbon imprints in the society. This prompted them to deliberate on instant actions they can take in their school and community to reduce Climate change.

For the third breakout session, the students got engaged in different activities such as drawings of Mangrove trees to show the importance of trees, project on air pollution, having a green corner in each class to promote healthy living, importance of SDGs, a poster installed in the concert hall and school entrance, poems and writing essays on climate change, upcycling by making cloth bags from old t-shirt. The students also decorated using natural plants and a table made from eco bricks.

Finally, brainstorming was done again in groups on careers and actions to solve global warming, for the fourth breakout sessions. The students mainly focused on green jobs and green techs. The event was a success and it was a great avenue to learn a great deal on climate change as they resolved to continually practice all they learnt.
