Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Government Model Secondary School’s View on Preventing Climate Change

With technical and funding support from Green Growth Africa in Partnership with the University of Waterloo – WISE, Canada and Bard Graduate Programs in Sustainability, USA, Government Model Secondary School, Nigeria had its Worldwide Teach-In on Climate and Justice Event, with fifty-eight participants. The event lasted for two hours fifteen minutes with three breakout sessions.

In the first breakout session, the students were divided into two groups, where each group discussed about climate change, it’s causes and effects on humans and the environments. Following the group discussions, each group delegated one group member to make a presentation of their discussions and outcomes to the general participants. They majored on talks around climate change effects such as poverty and displacement, health risk, food scarcity, loss of species, hotter temperature and increased drought.

The second breakout focused on different ways to reduce the effects of climate change in the society. The students, divided in two groups proposed the method of reducing the amount of wastes been produced, reuse old items by finding a new use for them, recycle by changing discarded items into new products and protecting planted trees.

During the third breakout session, the students identified careers they could build to protect the environment. Some of the mentioned careers includes, being an Environmental Scientist, Renewable Energy Engineer, Ecologist, Urban planner, Climate scientists amongst others. The event was a success as the students wrapped it up with drama, dance and poem presentation.
