The Earth Matters: How Kaimosi Girls’ High School are Fighting Climate Change

With technical and funding support from Green Growth Africa in Partnership with the University of Waterloo – WISE, Canada and Bard Graduate Programs in Sustainability, USA, Kaimosi Girl’s High School Vihiga County, Kenya hosted the Worldwide Teach-In on Climate and Justice Event. This event involved 41 participants including all staff members, students, and non-academic staff. The event lasted for three hours and it was divided into three breakout sessions.

The first breakout session was an insightful session as the facilitator gave an extensive breakdown on climate change, its effect and the consequences to the students. He also gave an extensive view on the human activities that increases green gas emission and how the use of fossil fuels bring about climate change, with consequences seen in the increase of earth’s normal temperature, intense droughts, water scarcity, severe fire outbreaks, rising sea-level, flooding, catastastrophic storms and declining biodiversity. In all, the earth is a system where everything is connected, changes in one area can influence the others.

The second breakout session had the students discuss the solutions to climate change. Some of their solutions include building adaptive capacity through integrated water resources management, stopping the cutting of trees, improvement of land management, letting go of the use of fossil fuel among other solutions. Their third breakout session was centered on discussing careers and other actions to decrease global warming.

In conclusion, the students learnt they had to put a stop to the past actions that have led the earth to face these climate changes as it affects every area of our living on earth. In all, as living and thriving matters humans, so does the earth matter too.
