In a commendable two-day teach-in event held on March 23rd and 24th, 2024, Digodigo Secondary School in Kirangi, Arusha, Tanzania, demonstrated its commitment to addressing climate change. With 102 participants engaged, the event encompassed various activities aimed at understanding, mitigating, and raising awareness about the climate crisis.
Day 1: Tree Planting Initiative
The event kicked off with a hands-on approach that saw 100 students collectively planting 200 trees around the school compound. This act of environmental stewardship laid the foundation for the subsequent discussions on climate change.


Day 2: In-depth Climate Discussions and Exhibitions
On the second day, students were divided into nine groups to delve into the concept of climate change. In the first breakout session, the students explored the concept of climate change, discussing its meaning and relevance in today’s world. In the second session, students identified various human and environmental factors contributing to climate change. Identifying agricultural practices, land use changes, volcanic activities, and industrial processes as major contributors, the students highlighted the urgent need for action. They also highlighted the adverse effects of climate change on their community, such as natural disasters, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, and infrastructure damage.
Art-Science Exhibition: Innovative Solutions
The highlight of the event was the fourth breakout session, where students showcased high-level strategies for addressing climate change in their community through an art-science exhibition. Exhibits included sustainable gas cylinders made from clay and pictorial representations of solar energy and wind turbines, demonstrating their creative approach to sustainable solutions.



Beyond Discussions: Side Events and Extracurricular Activities
In addition to breakout sessions, the event featured a variety of engaging side events, including dance performances, science exhibitions, panel discussions, storytelling, and song presentations, enhancing participants’ understanding and appreciation of climate change issues.
